Spotlight - Lean, Mean Operational Machine

The City of Westfield’s Water Recovery Department was recently featured in the June 2018 issue of the magazine “Water Environment & Technology”.  The magazine is the premier magazine for the water quality field.  The Water Environment & Technology journal provides information on cutting edge technologies, innovative solutions, operations and maintenance, regulatory and legislative impacts and professional development in the field of water resources.

The team pictured in the magazine includes employees:  Bob Forry, Jim Lewis, John Roushia, Ken Gagnon, Mitch Therrien, Jeff Thayer, Jeff Gamelli, Don Hawley, Chris Hall and Bob Pluta.  All employees have worked together on the project referenced in the article, entitled:  Lean, Mean Operational Excellence Machine:  Massachusetts Facility uses less energy and chemicals, improves maintenance while saving money.

The Water Recovery Department has worked together to creatively come up with solutions to problems. By working together as a team, they have been able to:  improve effluent quality, discharge less than 1/3 of permitted BOD’s, remove 75% of influent nitrogen and improve maintenance to the point where operating expenses have dropped by $300,000 for the past 2 years.
