DPW to Deploy New Anti-Icing Product

Salt Truck

The City of Westfield’s DPW Snow and Ice team is implementing a more effective and environmentally friendly deicing product beginning in the winter of 2019-2020. This liquid solution has the trade name “Magic-0TM.” It is a patented blend of Magnesium Chloride combined with molasses which will melt ice at temperatures as low as -49 degrees Fahrenheit (as compared to rock salt at approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit).

Magic-0TM is non-toxic, biodegradable, and has a corrosion index almost ten times lower than rock salt, and nearly as low as distilled water. This liquid can be added to existing rock salt to greatly increase its effectiveness, or applied in liquid form as a pre-treat to road surfaces. This pre-wetting drastically reduces the ability of snow and ice to bond to pavement allowing plows to remove more packed snow and ice. Pre-wetting with Magic-0TM is also safer on concrete and road surfaces than traditional ice melt products and reduces damage to curbside grasses and plants.

With its non-toxic, biodegradable, and non-corrosive properties Magic-0TM is also safer to handle and causes less degradation to vehicles and mechanical equipment.
