Construction of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail project kicked off this week and will continue through this construction season and into next year. A description of the project along with plans and renderings are available on the Engineering Departments website under active projects: (https://www.cityofwestfield.org/407/Columbia-Greenway).
As part of the project, the existing railroad bridges at Thomas Street, Chapel Street, and Orange Street will be replaced with new structures with a higher road clearance. The contractor will be removing the existing steel girder bridges starting on Monday, March 9th. In order to facilitate the work the roads in the immediate area will need to be closed. Road closures will be limited to the immediate area which are shown on the traffic control plans for the project available here. The work is expected to take 2 to 3 days per bridge. The contractor will start with Thomas Street, then Chapel Street, and finish with Orange Street. The road closures will be in effect from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm. The contractor will ensure access to all abutting properties are maintained at all times.
