[ARCHIVED] Westfield Police Department to Hold 17th Citizen Police Academy

The Westfield Police Department is accepting applications for the upcoming Citizen Police Academy.  City residents or those working within Westfield who meet the Academy’s admission requirements stated below are entitled to apply for this free class.  The Academy will run for 12 weeks. Space is limited to 16 participants.


The Citizen Police Academy provides members of our community with an inside look at law enforcement The goal of the Citizen Police Academy is to provide a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement's role in our community and share with participants an understanding of the operations and resources of the Westfield Police Department.


The next session of the Citizen Police Academy begins on January 30, 2018, and runs through April 17, 2018. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Westfield Police Department, 15 Washington Street. There will be one Saturday class held at the firing range.


Participants will interact with police executives and veteran officers during the academy. The following areas of the Department will be covered:


Introduction, History of the Westfield Police Department and Department tour
Criminal Law & The Justice System
Financial Crime & Fraud
Patrol Procedures
Drug Identification/Crime Scene Investigation
Defensive Tactics & Use of Force
School Resource Officer programs and Dispatch functions
Child Abuse and Domestic Violence
Firearm Safety  
Court System, Probation and Parole
Community Policing, Traffic and Commercial Truck Enforcement
Graduation Ceremony


Potential candidates for the Citizen Academy must meet the following criteria:


21 years of age
Reside in or be employed in the City of Westfield
No prior felony arrests
No misdemeanor arrests within two years of application
Any other past civil/criminal involvement will be evaluated on a per case basis

Eric Hall at 413-642-9383, or e-mail him at e.hall@cityofwestfield.org.  Participation is limited and is first come first served.  All applications must be submitted by Friday, January 26, 2018, at 4:00 pm, to be considered.
