Hiring Process

Whether you have been notified by Civil Service of a vacancy or are applying through the Hybrid Model, the hiring process is very similar.  When there is a vacancy within the Department, candidates from either path will be instructed to come to the Westfield Fire Department Headquarters to receive their application packet.  Application packets must be returned by the date specified.  

Once applications have been reviewed, selected candidates will be invited to an interview at the next Fire Commission Meeting.  The Westfield Fire Commission is a three-member board that facilitates the hiring process for the Department.  

Conditional offers of employment will be made to those candidates that the Commission believes meet the standards of the Westfield Fire Department.  The offer is contingent on the completion of the following:

  • An extensive criminal history background check
  • A thorough medical physical exam 
  • A psychological exam
  • A successful completion of the Civil Service ELPAT (Entry Level Physical Ability Test) 
    • Completing the ELPAT after the interview process is required for ALL candidates (Civil Service List and Hybrid Model candidates)
