During the 19th Century, when Yankee whale oil lit the world, men from more than 30 New England communities sailed the seven seas in the pursuit of whales, leaving their families behind for up to 5 years at a time. Meanwhile, new philosophies encouraging love match marriages became popular in New England society.
In the 1840's, a small group of married couples defied social and industrial tradition by going to sea together about whaleships. This presentation will focus on one of these remarkable couples - Captain John and Elizabeth Marble of Fall River, MA, using the letters and journals they left behind to tell a story of love, life, and loss at sea.

Jennifer Dorgan is the February artist in the Jasper Rand Art Museum in the Westfield Athenaeum. Her show includes acrylics, oils, colored pencil and fabric. She has been painting since she was a child but became serious about it in high school. Dorgan says, "I believe art is so necessary for all of our collective minds. It is an absolute must for growing children to be exposed to and an outlet for stress relief for all adults, no matter their skill level. I firmly believe practicing art is for everyone, especially for those who don't consider themselves "artists". "
Her newest medium is 'painting' with fabric! Thanks to one of her students, Eileen Doherty, who introduced her to quilt painting- she's hooked!
On Saturday, 2/22 Eileen Doherty and Jennifer Dorgan will run a free quilt painting demo at the Athenaeum. They will show you how to turn a fabric collage into a piece that looks like a painting!
